How to record a Microsoft Teams meeting
Teams records only with certain Microsoft 365 licenses, and guests can't record. Lira records the call from your side, on the Mac, and when it ends you have the transcript, the summary and the commitments.
Recording with Teams itself
- One person can record at a time, and everyone is notified when the recording starts.
- To record you need one of these licenses: Office 365 Enterprise E1, E3, E5, F3, A1, A3, A5, Microsoft 365 Business, Business Premium or Business Essentials; an IT admin must allow it; guests and people from another organization can't record.
- To start: More actions, then Record and transcribe, then Start recording.
Where Teams saves the recording
- Meetings: in the Recordings folder of the organizer's OneDrive. Channel meetings: on the channel's Files tab, in SharePoint. The link also shows up in the meeting chat.
Recording a Teams call with Lira
- The Mac app lives in the menu bar and captures both sides of your Teams call, plus your microphone.
- Nothing joins the meeting: Lira records the sound on your Mac.
- Audio is saved every 5 seconds: if something crashes, you lose at most 5 seconds, never the whole meeting.
- Not on a Mac: record from the browser or the iPhone and Android apps, which use your microphone.

Teams notifies everyone when its own recording starts. Lira records on your Mac and does not tell anyone for you; telling them is on you.

Where are Teams recordings stored?
In the organizer's OneDrive, Recordings folder; for channel meetings, in the channel's SharePoint.
Why can't I record a Teams meeting?
You need one of the licenses above, recording turned on by your IT admin, and to be inside the organizer's organization. Lira records on your own Mac, so none of these apply.
Can a guest record a Teams meeting?
Not with Teams' recording. With Lira, anyone records on their own Mac, and telling the others is on them.
